CEOs are getting richer as Canadians pay more on Trudeau’s watch « Canada’s NDP

Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement about new inflation numbers released today:

“Under Trudeau’s government, the cost of rent, mortgage, and food keeps going up. New numbers from Statistics Canada show just how hard it was in December, with Canadians paying over seven per cent more for rent, over four per cent more for food and a shocking 28 per cent more for their mortgages. The overall rise in inflation paints a bleak picture for Canadians going into 2024. With the Liberals, life just keeps getting harder for Canadians. People are playing by the rules and working hard, but they still can’t get ahead.

Canadians are seeing a rise in costs as ultra-rich CEOs get even richer, with record-breaking salaries for the top 100 CEOs averaging almost $15 million in 2022. With Trudeau’s Liberal government in power, CEOs are getting richer, and Canadians are getting gouged.

People in our country deserve a government that has their backs and will fight to bring down the cost of living, unlike the Conservatives and Liberals who fight tooth and nail to protect the interests of the ultra-rich. While Poilievre was in cabinet, he gave away $55 billion to corporations and, time and time again, has voted against support for families to get through these challenging times. It’s clear he’s in the pocket of the ultra-rich rather than fighting for hard-working families. With Trudeau and Poilievre, Canadian families pay more and get less, while the ultra-rich flourish.

New Democrats want to build an Ottawa that makes life easier for everyday Canadians and holds ultra-rich CEOs accountable for their corporate greed and price gouging. It’s time for hardworking families to get ahead. New Democrats are fighting in Ottawa – so families pay less, and get more.”
