Hudson’s Bay Employees in Kamloops On Strike

December 11, 2023 at 2:31 pm  Business, Kamloops, Labour

On Wednesday, the United Steelworkers (USW) union Local 1-417 issued a 72-hour strike notice to Hudson’s Bay in Kamloops. The official job action commenced at 9:30 am on Sunday, December 10th, with over 50 union members from USW and various other unions expressing their support on the picket lines.

The decision to serve the strike notice followed a meeting with the employer and a mediator at the BC Labour Relations Board on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the company demonstrated an unwillingness to offer a meaningful resolution to its workers.

Hudson’s Bay, aside from proposing a meager 1% raise (equivalent to 17 cents per hour), is also seeking to retract previously agreed-upon provisions from the 30-year-old collective agreement. Workers on the picket line stood firm in their determination, feeling disheartened by the disrespectful offer.

The USW stands as the largest private sector union in North America, boasting over 225,000 members in Canada and more than 850,000 members continent-wide. Renowned for its diversity, the USW represents working individuals across every sector of the economy in Canada.
