WILLIAMS LAKE – Thompson Rivers University’s (TRU) Applied Sustainable Ranching program in Williams Lake has been renamed and revamped to better serve the needs of students and the changing environment.

The program underwent an external review in 2022 to seek areas for improvement and opportunity. The result is a newly named program, Regenerative Agriculture (RGEN), that includes numerous upgrades while retaining a solid foundation in business management and soil health.

“Our faculty and staff are so excited to be delivering this unique program under a new name and structure to better reflect the program content and make it accessible to a wider range of students and adult learners,” says Gillian Watt, Regenerative Agriculture Program co-ordinator.

“With the effects of climate change looming all around us, the importance of understanding and learning how to apply regenerative agriculture practices has never been more vital.”

Among the changes:

  • Courses are all worth three credits and are three weeks long, so they are more accessible for students’ schedules.
  • Three new courses have been added: Food Sovereignty, Technology in Agriculture and Emergency Preparedness.
  • The host-farm practicum becomes more formalized as a credit course and students are given performance reviews by host-farm supervisors.

The program web page provides more informationThe next program intake is in January 2024.
