NDP MP Blake Desjarlais (Edmonton Griesbach) made the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats join the Métis People and all Canadians in celebrating the life and vision of Louis Riel.

Louis Riel was one of the first great Métis politicians. His leadership in the Red River Resistance created Manitoba and his work to protect French and minority rights built Canada as we know it.

Riel’s legacy as a father of confederation and an advocate for the rights of Métis people cannot be forgotten. While Métis communities continue to fight for recognition of their rights, New Democrats affirm our commitment to work alongside Métis leaders to build a better Canada.

New Democrats will keep pushing for justice and for the rights of Métis people to be acknowledged.”
