NANAIMO – New Democrat MLAs Sheila Malcolmson and Doug Routley say that new research funding for Vancouver Island University will improve the lives of people by advancing innovation in health, engineering, and technology.

“VIU research projects are naming and solving society’s greatest challenges,” said Sheila Malcomson, MLA for Nanaimo. “That’s why our government is funding innovative research at VIU, supporting the great minds behind this groundbreaking work”

Through the latest round of BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) grants, the B.C. New Democrat government is providing $2.5 million to support infrastructure at 16 research projects at five universities. Since 2017, the BCKDF has awarded more than $220 million to over 460 projects in B.C.

Vancouver Island University is receiving $106,389 as part of the BCKDF to help fund the following research projects:

  • High-resolution ambient mass spectrometry imaging for in-situ spatial metabolomics
  • Building research infrastructure in Central and North Vancouver Island with evidence-based, non-invasive, eye-tracking technologies

“These detailed and specific projects will help advance life science technology right here in B.C.,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “We know that some of the best research happens at world-class institutions in British Columbia and our government is happy to support.”

The BCKDF helps grow the economy by improving B.C.’s productivity and competitiveness – a key objective of B.C.’s Economic Plan. Along with the potential for commercialization, spinoffs and patents, this research helps us discover new ways to manage our environment and improve the health and well-being of British Columbians.

By investing in research infrastructure projects, the B.C. government is continuing to support post-secondary institutions to build toward a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive future.
