SAANICH – New Democrat MLA Murray Rankin says that new research funding for the University of Victoria will improve the lives of people by advancing innovation in health, engineering, and technology.

“Some of the brightest and most innovative minds in the province are students at the University of Victoria. Their projects are going to contribute to the wellbeing of British Columbians in a multitude of ways,” said Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordan Head. “Our government knows how beneficial it is to help support remarkable research projects like these.”

Through the latest round of BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) grants, the B.C. New Democrat government is providing $2.5 million to support infrastructure at 16 research projects at five universities. Since 2017, the BCKDF has awarded more than $220 million to over 460 projects in B.C.

The University of Victoria is receiving $585,000 as part of the BCKDF to help fund the following research projects:

  • Reducing non-communicable chronic disease by moving behavioural science into the real world
  • Human Motion at the Intersection of Engineering and Art through Extended Realities
  • Old Cell Enrichment (OCE)-DSB imaging platform to investigate age-related causes of genome instability
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Appurtenance for Synthesis

The BCKDF helps grow the economy by improving B.C.’s productivity and competitiveness – a key objective of B.C.’s Economic Plan. Along with the potential for commercialization, spinoffs and patents, this research helps us discover new ways to manage our environment and improve the health and well-being of British Columbians.

By investing in research infrastructure projects, the B.C. government is continuing to support post-secondary institutions to build toward a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive future.
