Ottawa must increase its francophone immigration targets

OTTAWA – Francophone communities throughout the country are demanding ambitious francophone immigration targets. The federal government should immediately heed calls from the Fédération des Francophones Hors Québec and the Québec government and direct the Immigration Ministry to establish an ambitious francophone immigration target, the Green Party of Canada said today.

“The Canadian Francophonie is struggling from coast to coast to coast. The demographic weight of an important part of our history and identity as a nation is melting away,” said Jonathan Pedneault, Green Party Deputy Leader. “We urge minister Miller to commit to ambitious francophone immigration targets for 2024-2026. The vitality of French in Canada will benefit more from concrete actions from his ministry than from idle words or new bills.”

Bill C-13, which amended the Official Languages Act, committed the federal government to establish immigration targets that would ensure the restoration and growth of the francophone demographic weight.

“Minister Miller now has an opportunity to show Quebeckers and Francophones throughout the country that Bill C-13 was about more than mere symbolic politics. There are millions of qualified francophone candidates for immigration throughout the world, from Europe to Africa. Canada should facilitate their entry and integration in the great Canadian family,” concluded Elizabeth May, Green Leader.
