NDP Statement on the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Jina Amini « Canada’s NDP

The NDP critic for Foreign Affairs, Heather McPherson, made the following statement:

“Today marks one year since the horrific killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini. It also marks one year since the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in Iran started.
Over the past year, New Democrats have witnessed the immense bravery of Iranians fighting for the rights of present and future generations of0 women in Iran.
New Democrats condemn the continued brutality of the IRGC against the Iranian people, including hundreds of unlawful killings and executions, tens of thousands of arbitrary arrests, widespread torture, including rape of detainees, and attacks on women and girls who defy discriminatory compulsory veiling laws.
The Liberal government, with its “so-called” feminist foreign policy, must employ every tool at its disposal to end these extreme violations against women and girls. This should include stronger sanctions against Iranian leadership and coordinated diplomacy with the global community to ensure an end to the Iranian regime’s ongoing and blatant human rights abuses.
New Democrats have secured a Parliamentary study of Canada’s response to the situation in Iran, which should begin within weeks. This study will address the Liberal government’s inaction regarding listing the IRGC as a terrorist entity and will also examine troubling links between the IRGC and some residents of Canada.
New Democrats will continue to urge the Canadian government to support the rights of women in Iran and around the world, and to ensure those fleeing violence and persecution are free to seek asylum here in Canada. This requires robust commitments from the Government of Canada – and we are here to push them forward.
On this first anniversary of the Iranian people’s uprising for freedom, and in remembrance of Mahsa Amini and the countless other innocent lives taken and imprisoned, New Democrats express our profound solidarity and support for the Iranian people.

Zan. Zendegi. Azadi.

Woman, Life, Freedom. “
