NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

Safe, new homes on the way for women and children in Stikine

March 10, 2023 at 11:30 am  Politics, Provincial

STIKINE – More women and children will have an affordable, safe and secure place to go, as 17 homes are either opening or starting construction in 2 different locations in Stikine.

“It’s important for women and children fleeing violence to have a place they can go to that they know is safe,” says Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine. “This type of housing is incredibly important across the province, and I am thrilled to see it come to our community.”

The new women’s housing will be operated by non-profit providers, who specialize in housing and supports for women, including transgender women, Two-Spirit, and non-binary people, and their dependent children who are experiencing or are at risk of violence. Support staff will provide residents with a range of services, including emotional support and safety planning to make sure women and children receive the help they need during a difficult and stressful time in their lives.

The new developments will be located in:

  • New Hazelton – 11 transition spaces and seven units of second-stage housing, expected to open in spring 2023.
  • Lower Post – six units of same and second-stage housing and 10 supportive homes, expected to open in spring 2023.

The province is committed to ensuring women and children leaving violence have safe places to recover and rebuild their lives. In 2018, Government committed $734 million to create the Women’s Transition Housing Fund to build 1,500 new units of much-needed housing, including transition houses, safe homes, second stage and long-term housing. This is the first significant investment in housing for women and children leaving violence in over two decades.
