New Democrats to hold Liberals and Conservatives to account on McKinsey contracts « Canada’s NDP

The NDP Critic for Public Services and Procurement, Gord Johns made the following statement as parliament’s investigation into McKinsey & Company’s $101.4 million in government contracts begins:

“After Canadians learned that the Trudeau government has handed a private, for-profit company, McKinsey, massive amounts of public money, they’ve rightfully been upset and concerned with this government’s priorities.

We have a competent public service that could be doing this work, but Justin Trudeau would rather fund his wealthy consultant friends as though they’re a government department.

This isn’t new from the Liberals. They could be investing in our public sector or using funds to improve health care, but they’d rather keep giving their rich friends more money.

Monday’s committee marks the beginning of an important investigation into the Liberals’ pattern of outsourcing the government’s responsibilities to ultra-wealthy consultants. The NDP will be digging for answers on why McKinsey alone received a whopping 20 government contracts totalling more than $100 million. We will also be looking back at the Conservative’s long-standing relationship with McKinsey while they were in power.

Canadians know all too well what’s going on – when Conservatives are in power, they hand out money to their rich insider friends. Then when the Liberals are government, they do the exact same thing.

It’s time to end break this vicious cycle. New Democrats are going to get to the bottom of this and push the government to stop contracting out to consultants when we have one of the best public services in the world.”
