NDP Statement on International Human Rights Day « Canada’s NDP

The NDP critic for foreign affairs, Heather McPherson, made the following statement:

On the 75th anniversary of Human Rights Day, New Democrats stand in solidarity with activists and advocates worldwide and reaffirm our commitment to fight for equality and dignity for all.

Today, we remember that in many parts of the world, people are still persecuted for their gender, race, religion, beliefs, age, sexual orientation, language or simply for seeking the truth. The Canadian government must remain absolute in denouncing all violations of fundamental human rights. The federal government must stand up for people fighting bravely for their freedoms.

The principles enshrined in the Declaration are as relevant today as they were in 1948. The NDP is proud of the work we have done – and continue to do – to stand up for the rights of all people in Canada and around the world.

Canada’s federal government has more work to do in upholding human rights in our country here at home. NDP MP Gazan has been a leader in fighting for the rights of Indigenous people and the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Her unanimous consent motion on recognizing residential schools as genocide passed with all-party support, and she’s been a tireless advocate for bringing justice to families who have lost their loved ones.

New Democrats have been steadfast in their support for the people of Iran and Ukraine. NDP critic for immigration Jenny Kwan, NDP critic for defence Lindsay Mathyssen and I have worked tirelessly to ensure sanctions from murderous regimes are being enforced and those fleeing persecution can find a safe home in Canada.

Today, I invite all Canadians to take action in our daily lives to uphold the rights that protect us all and to fight all activities that undermine our human rights. Human rights – no matter what country your from – are human rights.

Freedom, equality, justice, and human dignity can never be taken for granted.”
