OTTAWA — NDP MP Blake Desjarlais (Edmonton Griesbach) has won a vote in the House of Commons calling on the government to condemn FIFA’s threat to penalize players and teams who wear OneLove armbands at the World Cup in Qatar.

Desjarlais’ motion passed unanimously.

“The FIFA World Cup players are taking a brave stance for human rights, and I’m grateful for the support from all MPs,” said Desjarlais. “It’s important we, as Canadians, speak out to support 2SLGBTQI+ communities around the world — especially in places where their safety and fundamental rights are not protected. FIFA needs to do better.”

The text of Desjarlais’ motion reads as follows:

“That, given that international sporting governing bodies have a moral obligation to support players and fans in highlighting the fight for equality and against homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of discrimination in sport, the House condemns the decision of FIFA to threaten to penalize players and teams who wear OneLove armbands at the World Cup in Qatar.”

“International tournaments like the World Cup are a place to celebrate our differences. Players who speak out in support of human rights should not be punished for their efforts,” said Desjarlais. “We, as elected officials, have a responsibility to speak out against FIFA’s actions, and stand in solidarity with the players.”
