Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council

November 4, 2022 at 7:32 pm  The Arts

Full Name: Dennis Cound

Medium: Sculptor/pyrography

How long have you been doing your art: I have been sculpting professionally since 2003, but have been associated with many facets of the arts, from Karate, acting and voiceovers to screenwriting and carving.

What got you initially interested in the art you do: The pyrography that I do now, was born from my love for barn wood and its historic feel and connection to human life and sheltering us. The stories it could tell. So, I tell stories about it.

What is something you have learned about yourself through your art: To give back. Donate. To create happiness through creation. Challenge myself.

What do you enjoy the most about your art: Seeing the response of people — especially family portraits or lost animals. I guess I also love where my art takes me. To a far-off land with no politics, famine, despair or hate. Just love and birth. Not to mention, exercising this aging brain.

What is your favourite joke/quote: “Don’t concentrate on the finger, or you’ll miss all that heavenly glory” – Bruce Lee… Live in the present.

What is something most people don’t know about you: I can spin a basketball on any object (with a point). Auditioned to be the voice of ‘Bender’ of Futurama. I have the same recessed tooth as Mel Gibson.

If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, and why: I would love to teach Voice overs because it allows one to be free and explore capabilities within oneself. Develop character through physical and vocal movement. Having fun and using your voice to its full potential. Just be an idiot, no one’s looking.

What do you think makes art important: Freedom! Allow everyone to create without prohibition, and encourage opinion and perspective. It also functions as documenting life as we know it.

Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council: The K.A.C. has given me a platform for me to express myself artistically and meet other like-minded artists.

What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year (A special show or project you’re working on): I’m gearing up for ART EXPOSED!
