The Liberals have let grocery chains price gouge families, forcing Canadians to turn to food banks « Canada’s NDP

Today, the annual report from Food Banks Canada shows food bank usage in Canada is at an all-time high – with 1.5 million visits in one-month alone

The Leader of Canada’s NDP Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“With rising interest rates, and skyrocketing food prices Canadian families have had to stretch their money further just to keep up with their grocery bills – and it just hasn’t been enough. At record rates, families have had to turn to food banks more often to get the help they need. People need support in coping with the cost-of-living crisis.

For months, New Democrats have been urging the Liberals and Conservatives to stand up to grocery store CEOs making millions of dollars in bonuses while Canadians struggle with higher food bills. But they just kept supporting CEOs who are getting rich off of the backs of Canadians. It’s devastating for families struggling to get by.

Our country is currently faced with an inflation and cost-of-living crisis, with food prices at a 41-year high. And while families across the country are having to make hard decisions about their family budgets, some in this country are doing just fine and profiting from inflation. People rightly want to know why this is, and why the Liberal government hasn’t stopped it.

Last week, New Democrats successfully forced all Members of Parliament to support a proposal to tackle the corporate greed that is driving up grocery costs. But, we know that the Liberals must do more to help people make ends meet– especially as the Deputy Prime Minister is warning of difficult financial times ahead.

People expect to see a much more robust strategy to protect Canadians against a possible recession. New Democrats will keep pushing the government to stand up for Canadian families, close the tax loopholes that allow rich CEOs to avoid paying what they owe and act to help lower grocery bills. You shouldn’t have to worry about being able to put food on the table. One thing is for sure, we will keep fighting for you, not for grocery chains and rich CEOs.”
