Everyone is invited to hear TRU Provost Gillian Balfour talk with two women who were the first and only woman presidents of their universities in Canada: Martha Piper and Indira Samarasekera. They will discuss their experiences, which they have chronicled in a new book called Nerve: Lessons on leadership from two women who went first.

Speakers

Martha C. Piper, O.C., O.B.C., PhD    

Martha Piper served as the first woman president of the University of British Columbia and has been a director of the Bank of Montreal, Shoppers Drug Mart and TransAlta Corporation.  An Officer of the Order of Canada, she was born in Lorain, Ohio, and lives with her husband, William Piper, in Vancouver.

Indira V. Samarasekera, O.C., PhD

Indira Samarasekera served as the first woman president of the University of Alberta and is a director of Magna International, TC Energy, Intact Financial Corporation and Stelco and has served as a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia. An Officer of the Order of Canada, she was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and lives in Vancouver.

Gillian Balfour, TRU Provost

Gillian Balfour assumed the position of TRU provost in July, coming to Kamloops from King’s University College at Western University in London, ON, where she served as vice-president and academic dean. Before that, she was associate dean of Trent University Online, and full professor of sociology with a focus on socio-legal studies and criminology. While at Trent, she was a member of Canada’s Walls to Bridges collective that provides prison-based learning for incarcerated and non-incarcerated students.
