NDP MLA Nicholas Simons says that people in Powell River-Sunshine Coast will benefit from emergency operations centre funding

Powell River – New Democrat MLA Nicholas Simons says that new provincial emergency preparedness funding will help improve emergency operation centres, and better equip local governments and First Nations in Powell River-Sunshine Coast to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.

Over $3.2 million in funding is being shared among 84 First Nations and local governments to help communities build or upgrade emergency operations centres (EOCs), purchase equipment, or enhance capacity through volunteer recruitment, retention and training.

“Emergency Operation Centre funding is an important step towards keeping people and families safe in times of disaster,” said MLA Nicholas Simons. “New Democrats are committed to improving capacity, communication, and operations, making sure that residents can rely on their communities when they need support.”

The Qathet Regional District in Powell River is receiving $25,000 in funding for EOC Training Exercises. This project will enable the community to be equipped and ready in the event of a disaster.

Other projects being funded in the region are listed below:

  • Sunshine Coast Regional District- $25,000 for EOC Communication Modernization.
  • Tla’amin Nation – $25,000 for Emergency Services Radio Network

Budget 2022 provides $2.1 billion to support communities in building back better from recent disasters, and to strengthen defences to make sure people across B.C. are protected from future disasters.
