Tofino – New Democrat MLA Josie Osborne says that new provincial emergency preparedness funding will help improve emergency operation centres, and better equip local First Nations to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.

Over $3.2 million in funding is being shared among 84 First Nations and local governments to help communities build or upgrade emergency operations centres (EOCs), purchase equipment, or enhance capacity through volunteer recruitment, retention and training.

“Investments in community safety and emergency preparedness are critical to ensuring that we have the capacity to respond in times of disaster,” said Josie Osborne, MLA for Mid-Island-Pacific Rim. “The funding for the Ditidaht First Nation and the Hupačasath First Nation is an important step in keeping our friends and neighbors safe.”

The Ditidaht First Nation is receiving $25,000 in funding to set up an EOC. This project will enable the community to respond quickly to disasters.

The Hupačasath First Nation is also receiving $25,000 for an emergency preparedness generator.

Budget 2022 provides $2.1 billion to support communities in building back better from recent disasters, and to strengthen defences to make sure people across B.C. are protected from future disasters.
