Federal govt. announces $207M for B.C. wildfire recovery and climate resilience – June 10, 2022

June 10, 2022 at 1:25 pm  Federal, Politics

Bill Blair, the federal minister of emergency preparedness, and Mike Farnworth, the British Columbia minister of public safety, speak with reporters in Ottawa. The news conference follows a fourth meeting of the committee of federal and B.C. ministers on disaster response and climate resilience, which was struck in November 2021 to coordinate responses to extreme weather events in the province. The committee’s fifth and final meeting is scheduled to take place in July. Minister Blair announces that the federal government will be delivering an advance payment of $207 million to B.C. through the Disaster Financial Assistant Arrangements. The support is aimed to help rebuild infrastructure in wake of the wildfires that tore through the province from April to September 2021. The wildfire season in 2021 was one of the worst in B.C.’s history, with the village of Lytton being entirely destroyed.
