June 8, 2022 at 8:51 am  Federal, Politics

Federal ministers David Lametti (justice) and Marc Miller (Crown-Indigenous relations) announce the appointment of Kimberly Murray as independent special interlocutor for unmarked graves and burial sites associated with former residential schools. She will work with Indigenous communities on creating a federal legal framework to ensure the proper treatment and protection of unmarked graves and burial sites. Kúkpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir (Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc), Chief Cadmus Delorme (Cowessess First Nation), and Elder Fred McGregor (Algonquin Anishinaabe) also make remarks at the news conference in Ottawa. A member of the Kanehsatake Mohawk Nation, Murray is a lawyer and the former executive director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Her two-year mandate begins on June 14. She will deliver an interim report after her first year in the role, and a final report at the end of the two years. In August 2021, the federal government announced its intention to appoint a special interlocutor to work with Indigenous communities, provincial and territorial governments, and other relevant institutions. The 2022 federal budget committed $10.4 million over two years to support the appointment and work of the special interlocutor. (June 8, 2022)
