NDP statement on World Oceans Day « Canada’s NDP
Leader of Canada’s NDP Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:
“Today, as we celebrate World Oceans Day, it is important to recommit to protecting our oceans and to take meaningful steps to address the climate crisis for all Canadians.
With the increase in extreme flooding and extreme weather that we’ve seen over the past year, it is clear that more needs to be done to protect our oceans. The impact of pollution, global warming and rising sea levels on the ecosystems, infrastructure and on Canadians is undeniable – and coastal communities are paying the price.
Sadly, for decades we’ve seen Liberal and Conservative governments fail to take the necessary action to address the climate crisis and protect our oceans – and under the current Liberal government this is getting worse.
While Liberals say they are committed to reducing the harm to our planet and oceans – they keep putting public money on the line for the Trans Mountain Pipeline, they keep giving billions to profitable oil and gas companies, and voted against an NDP proposal to end fossil fuel subsidies. The same week that the IPCC released it’s report on the need to mitigate climate change impacts, the Liberals approved a massive oil and gas project.
Indigenous communities and coastal communities need the Liberals to do better – but time and time again the Liberals support wealthy oil and gas companies instead of addressing the climate crisis. Communities have the knowledge to address the climate crisis, but need the Liberals take the bold action needed in supporting their efforts.
In Canada, we have the longest coastline in the world – and it’s important that we do our part to protect it. Today, let’s recommit to working together to advocate for greater protections for Canadian coastlines and the world’s oceans.”
