PM Justin Trudeau on B.C. drug decriminalization, COVID-19 border restrictions – June 1, 2022

June 1, 2022 at 7:50 am  Federal, Politics

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responds to questions from reporters on Parliament Hill about the possibility of national drug decriminalization following British Columbia being granted a three-year exemption under the federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to decriminalize possession of small amounts of certain illicit drugs for personal use. The province requested the exemption, which will apply to residents 18 years of age and older, to deal with the opioid crisis. Speaking briefly with reporters ahead of the weekly federal Liberal caucus meeting, the prime minister is also asked about calls to lift COVID-19 travel restrictions. The federal government recently extended current border measures for travellers entering Canada until at least June 30.
