Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council
Full Name: Elaine Burns
Medium: Oil Painting
How long have you been doing your art: I desperately wanted to pursue my passion for art but have only been able to devote my time to it for the past six years.
What got you originally interested in the art you do: I painted four landscapes and one abstract when I was 12. My husband always admired those early paintings and encouraged me to get back into my craft. So, I picked up the brushes and have been painting ever since.
What is something you have learned about yourself through your art: I’ve learned that I could be more patient! When working with oils and making your way through a painting, you definitely need patience every step of the way. I have learned how to slow down, enjoy the process and let the creativity happen!
What do you enjoy the most about your art: I really enjoy the creative process. Every work of art is a journey and the outcome may not be what you originally envisioned. I have had works of art that naturally took their own path. These are the pleasant surprises!
What is your favourite joke/quote: “Art speaks where words are unable to explain”. This quote says so much to me. It captures the essence of the role of an artist and how we express ourselves through our art. Sometimes words are not enough to deliver the message.
If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, why: I am quite sure it would be oil painting, firstly because of my love for the medium but also because of the versatility of oils. I would encourage the artist to sketch, sketch and sketch some more – work out the composition, the lights and darks, before touching the canvas. We are all students – there is so much to learn.
What do you think makes art important: Art enriches people’s lives, visually and emotionally. Every painting tells a story that is different for every viewer. I hope that when someone sees my art, it speaks to them and opens the door for creative discussion. As an artist, it is a form of expression, how we respond to our surroundings and interpret it for others to see.
What is something most people don’t know about you: I am very passionate about nature and our environment. Seeing birds and animals in the wild brings me so much joy. I try to do what I can to help the planet and in turn, help the animals to survive in this challenging world. This is what defines me and my art.
Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council: I joined the KAC so I could become more involved in the arts scene in Kamloops. The KAC has so many excellent programs and offerings for local artists. My membership helped me to gain exposure to my art in the community. I have met so many wonderful people and like-minded artists.
What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year (A special show or project you’re working on): I have a new body of work that I will be showcasing in a solo exhibition at the Old Courthouse in May. It is called “No Where to Run, No Where to Hide: The Birds”. The birds are colourful and their message is impactful. I invite you to join me, from May 13 to June 4.
