Update on federal government’s intent to apologize to No.2 Construction Battalion – March 28, 2022

March 28, 2022 at 8:55 am  Federal, Politics

In a virtual event, Defence Minister Anita Anand reaffirms the federal government’s intent to honour No. 2 Construction Battalion’s service to Canada during the First World War and announces a ceremony will be held in Truro, Nova Scotia, on July 9, 2022, to apologize for the discrimination that the battalion experienced. The unit was Canada’s first and only all-Black battalion-sized formation, and was comprised of 300 men who were prevented from fighting in the war because of their race. Also providing remarks are Sean Fraser (minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship), Darrell Samson (parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs), Greg Fergus (chair of the Canadian Caucus of Black Parliamentarians), Russell Grosse (executive director of the Black Cultural Center of Nova Scotia), Douglas Ruck (representative from the National Apology Advisory Committee and Black Battalion Historical Marker Society), Sheila White (granddaughter of Rev. Captain Wm. Andrew White, chaplain of the battalion), and Sylvia Parris (daughter of Joseph Parris, member of the battalion).
