NDP MLA Brenda Bailey says more $10 a Day child care spaces coming to Vancouver

VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLA Brenda Bailey says families across Vancouver will save money on child care as more local child care centres become $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites where fees are capped at a maximum of $200 a month per child.

“Child care can put enormous pressure on families and for far too long, not enough was done to help people access the kind of child care that suits their needs, and their budget,” said Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. “One of the learnings across the board from the pandemic was that child care is an economic issue, not only a social issue. Working parents rely on quality child care, and our province relies on our workers. That is why our government is working to build a universal child care system that provides relief for everyone.”

The following child care sites in Vancouver are becoming $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites, which means a total of 875 child care spaces will have fees dramatically reduced for parents:

  • Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia – Waverly School-Age Care, 24 spaces
  • Ray-Cam Co-operative Association – Raymur Place Day Care and Raymur Place Out of School Care, 95 spaces
  • Strathcona Community Centre Association – Strathcona Community Centre Preschool, 172 spaces
  • The Britannia Community Services Centre Society – Britannia School Age Child Care, 77 spaces
  • The Britannia Community Services Centre Society – Eagles in the Sky – Eaglets Daycare, 25 spaces
  • The Britannia Community Services Centre Society – Eagles in the Sky Out of School Care, 40 spaces
  • The Britannia Community Services Centre Society – Grandview Terrace Childcare II, 50 spaces
  • The YMCA of Greater Vancouver – Djavad Mowafaghian Child Care Centre, 49 spaces
  • The YMCA of Greater Vancouver – Osler YMCA Kids Club, 24 spaces
  • The YMCA of Greater Vancouver – Seymour YMCA Kids Club, 24 spaces
  • Thunderbird Neighbourhood Association – Thunderbird Out of School Care, 30 spaces
  • Thunderbird Neighbourhood Association – Thunderbird Preschool, 20 spaces
  • Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres – Dorothy Lam Children’s Centre/Elsie Roy School, 142 spaces
  • Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres – International Village Children’s Centre/Crosstown School Age Program, 103 spaces

This increases the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces available for families across the province, from 2,500 when the program began in 2018, to more than 6,500. Through a partnership with the Government of Canada, the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces in the province will more than double again to 12,500 by December 2022.

In addition to $10 a Day child care spaces, the BC New Democrat government is helping tens of thousands of families save as much as $1,600 a month on child care through the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative and the Affordable Child Care Benefit.

By the end of this year, the average rate of child care will be reduced by 50% from 2019 levels for children five and younger.
