How Do You View Art?

January 28, 2022 at 2:43 pm  The Arts

Besides the obvious descriptors like “community, outreach, and artistic” you might think “painting” or “drawing”. But why limit it to one category of art, when there are so many more! One of our goals at the KAC is to promote all art forms. Art is defined in many ways, so categorizing something undefinable is no easy task; but basically, everyone can agree that art is something you create. And with that in mind, let’s take a look at different forms of art.

Sure, you have your visual artist programs like Crossing Bridges, Art Exposed, and SMALL//works. Exhibitions are a no-brainer when it comes to displaying those 2D paintings, photographs, and drawings. Even drawings themselves can be presented with so many different mediums and skill levels like charcoal versus digital art, or gouache paint versus architectural design.

But what about 3D arts? They are also commonly associated with art. Suddenly you have a whole new outlet to consider like sculpture, pottery, wood working, jewelry, paper crafts, furniture design, and snow sculptures! The list goes on and on. What other kinds of 3D art can you think of?

Another common form of art is performance. We have our Rivertown Players each summer taking on every role in theatre from acting and music to costumes and sets (more forms of visual art, by the way!). Acting, whether film or theatre, is a beautiful form of art that everyone can enjoy. Same goes with playing instruments in a band or on the street.

Speaking of the Rivertown Players, did you know they WRITE their plays too? That’s right! Each show you see is written and workshopped by those very same actors. They’re very talented folks, aren’t they? Let’s talk about writing. Cookbooks, novels, children’s books, plays, and even billboards all count as a form of art. If you’d like to see books by local authors, you can stop by the KAC offices in the Old Courthouse to view our literary exhibit featuring books for sale by your neighbours!

Let’s move on to something a little more left field: culinary arts. Would you consider cooking an art form? You create something from ingredients. You can use your imagination to present a new dish or a unique flavour. Food is enjoyed by ALL people. We say it’s art!

Fashion is another form of art that is commonly overlooked. We mentioned the Rivertown Players making their costumes – sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gluing all have their place in art. Piecing together the right clothes and accessories is like an artistic puzzle.

There are so many forms of art we couldn’t possibly list them all easily. What about glasswork and florals? Where do carpets and basket-weaving fit in? Like we said, art is something you create. Is there something unique that you do that we didn’t list? We’d love to hear about it!
