St. Andrew’s on the Square Returns to City of Kamloops Operation
In November 2021, the Kamloops Heritage Society (KHS) made the difficult decision to decline the operational contract for St. Andrew’s on the Square (St. Andrew’s) and return the operation of the historical building to the City.
St. Andrew’s was built in 1887 and is a highly valued community heritage resource. The KHS was instrumental in saving the church and leading its restoration in 1995 and has operated the building since then. The building has been a community staple and is a popular site for weddings, funerals, yoga, small cultural events, and more. The City created Gaglardi Square adjacent to St. Andrew’s in 1999, which further enhanced the site and the facility’s use.
On January 1, 2022, the City will take over St. Andrew’s operation. The City is committed to honouring all bookings that had been made through KHS—new bookings will not be available until mid-February once the City has determined and confirmed the operating processes. Once the facility is ready for booking, information will be available on Kamloops.ca.
“The KHS regrets that due to the continuing restrictions from the pandemic operating St. Andrews is not financially doable for us.” said Sheila Parks, KHS President. “We will continue to work with the City to ensure that events at St. Andrew’s continue to be a vital part of many Kamloops families’ histories and memories.”
The City worked closely with KHS throughout December to transfer knowledge of the building, user groups, and events and to discuss the future use of St. Andrew’s.
“We are truly thankful for the dedication of the Kamloops Heritage Society and the care that they provided to St. Andrew’s,” said Barb Berger, the City’s Recreation, Social Development, and Cultural Manager. “The building is a treasured resource, and we intend to keep it that way. We are sensitive to its history and we will continue to work to preserve its story.”
The KHS is looking forward to continuing its work as heritage society and role of advocacy and education on matters of heritage in Kamloops. For anyone interested in working with KHS, please contact kamloopsheritagesociety@gmail.com.
