Kamloops Fire Rescue Homesafe Program Targets Fire Prevention

December 7, 2021 at 2:04 pm  Kamloops, Municipal, News

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) has re-energized the Kamloops Homesafe program, which started in 2018. The Kamloops Homesafe program provides proactive public education on the importance of working smoke alarms and how to prevent fires in the home.

KFR is committed to ensuring that all Kamloops residents, especially the most vulnerable demographics, are protected by functioning smoke alarms.

If you are unsure of the status of your smoke alarms or have not changed your smoke alarm in the last 10 years, KFR encourages you to test your alarms or to request a Homesafe inspection if you require assistance. If your smoke alarms are not working, you can make a request with KFR, and arrangements can be made to install a new alarm for free.

During the Homesafe inspection, KFR members will:

  • check your smoke alarms
  • make cooking safety recommendations as more than half of all residential fires are caused by cooking
  • check for safe use of electrical devices including extension cords and power bars
  • discuss candle, match, and lighter safety
  • go over your home fire escape plan
  • cover a variety of fire and general safety topics

There is no cost for a HomeSafe inspection. At the end of the inspection, KFR will provide you with a written record of the inspection’s findings and recommendations.

To request a smoke alarm or Homesafe inspection, visit Kamloops.ca/HomeSafe or call 250-320-7641. A KFR member will be in touch to confirm eligibility and to set up a home visit.

One of the first lines of defence in keeping your home and family safe is a working smoke alarm. Let’s work together and keep your home safe.
