Parliamentary secretary’s statement on Pride 2021

June 28, 2021 at 2:57 pm  BC, News, Politics

Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity has released the following statement in honour of Pride 2021:

“June is Pride month – an opportunity to celebrate love and equity among people of all genders and orientations in our communities. While an opportunity for celebration, Pride is also a time for reflection, awareness and protest against ongoing discrimination, hate and violence against 2SLGBTQ+ people.

“This year, we also grieve with horror and heartbreak as we learn of the burial sites of children lost to their communities at residential schools here in British Columbia and in Saskatchewan.

“Survivors and Indigenous communities tell us that there are more discoveries to come, and it is difficult to mark any event for celebration at this time.

“We must continue to take action and work toward a better future where everyone in British Columbia, especially those who are disenfranchised, discriminated against or marginalized, have equal opportunities for life, love, community and success in our province.

“Along with celebration, Pride carries with it pain, anger and profound importance for so many people. Pride also recognizes the importance of standing together with friends and allies from all walks of life, as we fight oppression and achieve a better future through that shared struggle.

“This year, let us come together with solemnity, respect and sorrow for the many lives who have been taken far too soon – those lost to homophobia and transphobia, racism and historical and persistent colonialism. Let us also lift up and celebrate the resilience and joy in these communities and the difference they make in every corner of our province.

“We surround our 2SLGBTQ+ friends, family members, neighbours – and especially this year, Indigenous members of the community – with all our support, compassion and protection, as we work together for that sorely needed change.”
