New commissioner, deputy commissioner appointed to BC Ferry Commission

Eva Hage has been appointed commissioner of the BC Ferry Commission, which sets price caps on the maximum allowable annual increase in fares and approves major capital expenditures for BC Ferries.
Hage is being appointed for a six-year term, effective July 1, 2021. She was appointed B.C. deputy ferries commissioner in 2019. Hage is a senior transportation finance and business advisor with 30 years of experience working with government agencies and private companies. She is a founding partner of Winter Cover Consulting Group Inc. She also served as chair and co-chair on the Southern Gulf Island Ferry Advisory Committee. Hage has held senior positions with Partnerships BC, Steer Davies Gleave and B.C.’s Crown Corporation Secretariat. Hage holds a master of business administration from the University of Western Ontario and a bachelor of commerce from the University of Alberta.
Hage replaces Sheldon Stoilen who, as the current commissioner and former deputy commissioner, has been involved in setting price caps for ferry fares for three consecutive four-year terms. He was appointed commissioner in 2018 and, prior to that appointment, served as deputy commissioner for 10 years.
Piet Langstraat is being appointed B.C. deputy ferries commissioner for a six-year term, effective July 1, 2021. Langstraat is a member of the Ministry of Education’s COVID-19 response team. Langstraat is a sector liaison for the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning with the Ministry of Education. He is also an independent contractor. Previously, Langstraat was superintendent of schools and chief executive officer for the Greater Victoria School District and Red Deer Public School District. He holds a master of science in educational administration from the University of Oregon and a bachelor of education in secondary English from the University of Calgary.
The BC Ferry Commission is a quasi-judicial regulatory agency operating under the Coastal Ferry Act and is independent of the provincial government and BC Ferry Services Inc.
