Columbia Corridor Area Upgrades Coming this Summer
Kamloops, BC – The Sahali area will be getting an extensive facelift this summer with upgrades coming to the Columbia Street West Corridor.
The Columbia Corridor Project consists of three components:
- Columbia Street West from McGill Road to Notre Dame Drive (highway boundary), Summit Drive between McGill Road and Columbia Street West, and Notre Dame Drive between Columbia Street West and Summit Drive will be milled and repaved, including modified right-turn channels at the intersection of Notre Dame Drive and Summit Drive and various median and boulevard modifications
- water main upgrades along Notre Dame Drive from Columbia Street West to Summit Drive
- traffic signalization upgrades to the intersection of Columbia Street West and Notre Dame Drive
Combining the three portions of the project will reduce the impact on the public and area businesses and save money. The City has hired BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. as the prime contractor.
Construction will begin June 14, and is expected to take approximately two months to complete. Work will start on Notre Dame Drive, which will result in a closure of Notre Dame Drive to westbound traffic. A detour is provided to westbound traffic via Summit Drive. This portion of the project is expected to take approximately three weeks.
As the work continues through the corridor, heavily impactful portions of the project will be completed at night.
The City will work closely with essential service providers, including Kamloops Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance Service, the RCMP, and Kamloops Transit, to ensure service is maintained through the construction area.
A minimum of two travel lanes (one in each direction) will be maintained through the work zone OR a detour route will be provided; however, motorists should expect congestion and delays and plan accordingly. Consider using alternate routes or modes of transportation, such as transit, cycling, or walking. Safe pedestrian access will be maintained through the work zone.
The City will implement an extensive communications plan that utilizes traffic webcams, electronic roadside message boards, radio and print ads, social media, the City’s website, and other means to inform the public of anticipated delays, lane closures, and other traffic disruptions.
