Safety Improvements coming to section of Coquihalla
Thursday, June 3, 2021 7:30 AM
To improve safety for people travelling on the Coquihalla (Highway 5) south of Merritt, centre median barriers will be installed and the highway shoulder widened.
A $2.2-million contract has been awarded to Jakes Construction Ltd. for the Highway 5 Mine Creek Curves project, about 55 kilometres south of Merritt. This project covers a section of the Coquihalla that has been the site of some cross-over crashes.
Crews will install four kilometres of centre median barrier, which will improve highway safety for people who live and work in this region by reducing the potential for some accidents.
These safety enhancements will make this section of the Coquihalla safer and more reliable for everyone who travels the highway, including commercial truck drivers carrying goods.
Work is expected to start in late June 2021 and be completed this fall.
Drivers can expect minor delays during this project.
Drivers are reminded to obey construction zone speed limits and follow the direction of traffic-control personnel. Updates on traffic impacts will be available online: DriveBC.ca
Provincial construction sites have protocols and policies in place following the requirements of the provincial health officer to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures include physical distancing and other protocols to ensure worker and public safety.
