Get Up, Get Out, and Get Active on National Health and Fitness Day
Kamloops, BC – Saturday, June 5, is National Health and Fitness Day, and the City of Kamloops is encouraging residents to get up, get out, and get active. Canada is in the second year of coping with COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. It’s key to highlight the different ways people can get active and how important activity is for physical and mental health.
“Physical Activity is a powerful tool as we cope with COVID fatigue. Let’s celebrate the benefits of activity and share ways we can move, feel good, and share the joy of the great outdoors!” said Jill Koot, the City’s Health and Wellness Coordinator. “Now, more than ever, we need to keep moving to stay healthy, both mentally and physically.”
The City is providing free access to the Tournament Capital Centre and Westsyde Fitness Centre on Saturday, June 5. Participants must register in advance online at Kamloops.ca/PerfectMind or by calling 250-828-3500 to take advantage of the opportunity. Residents are reminded to practise physical distancing, come dressed for their activity, and to bring their own water bottles as water fountains, change rooms, and lockers are not available at this time.
Kamloops residents can also showcase how they’re celebrating through a photo contest on the City’s Parks and Recreation Facebook page for a chance to win prizes. Residents who participate in the photo contest are encouraged to use #ShowUsYourMoves and to use the tag @CityofKamloopsPRC.
“We want to identify and applaud the many ways that Kamloops residents are keeping active and utilizing the trails, waterways, and the local parks,” Said Koot. “Sharing in the Facebook photo contest is a great way to encourage others to get out of the house and be active.”
National Health and Fitness Day is also a great opportunity to track your fitness for the Community Better Challenge through ParticipACTION, a national challenge running June 1–June 30. In 2019, Kamloops placed in the top five cities in Western Canada. Learn more and participate at Kamloops.ca/CommunityBetterChallenge.
