Kamloops vs. Canada—Kamloops Residents Are Invited to Get Moving for the Chance to Win $100,000 for Their Community
Kamloops, BC—The 2019 ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge had Canadians sitting less and moving more with a total of 265,813,108 physical activity minutes tracked. Enderby, BC, was crowned Canada’s Most Active Community in 2019, and Kamloops placed in the top five for Western Canada. The national challenge returns for 2021, and the City, along with PLAY Kamloops, is encouraging residents to get active and to track physical activity minutes to take home the $100,000 grand prize.
The Community Better Challenge runs June 1–30 and aims to encourage residents in communities across Canada to connect with friends and neighbours to build social bonds while participating in physical activity while adhering to provincial health order protocols.
Members from PLAY Kamloops are working across various sectors to promote the competition and leading the local campaign to get Kamloops residents moving. With support from the City, School District No. 73, PacificSport Interior BC, and the BGC Kamloops, and local sports and fitness organizations, the goal is to create as much awareness of the competition as possible before the competition starts on June 1.
Chelsea Tekonomy, the City’s Active Living Coordinator, is excited to get this year’s challenge started. “COVID-19 has had both a physical and mental toll on our residents. There’s no better time to gather your bubble, get active, and increase your physical and mental health. Let’s use the Community Better Challenge as a way to encourage our teammates, friends, families, and coworkers to move more,” said Tekonomy. “Kamloops is an extremely active community, and we need to have residents, local teams, fitness organizations, and businesses show off their activity and support by logging movement minutes. We placed in the top five in 2019, let’s see if we can beat it!”
To get started, create an account on the ParticipACTION website or track your physical activity minutes on the ParticipACTION app. Join as and individual or as a team and connect with people across our community for the chance to win weekly team or individual prizes.
If Kamloops wins the Community Better Challenge, the money will go towards an initiative that encourages social connection, community building, and physical activity.
Every move counts—from walking the dog to gardening to playing with the kids—the more activity, the greater the chance to win. Learn more at PLAYKamloops.com.
