This backgrounder contains additional information on the five projects that will create 287 new licensed child care spaces in Surrey and Langley, approximately 200 of which are set to open by the fall.

O Siem Early Years & Child Care Space (Surrey)

The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association is partnering with the City of Surrey to renovate a residential building next to Hawthorne Park into a new child care centre. The facility will create 32 new licensed child care spaces, including eight infant and toddler spaces, 16 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten and eight spaces for children up to the age of 12. Centre programming will align with the Aboriginal Head Start six components: culture and language, education, health promotion, nutrition, social support and parental and family involvement. The centre will offer health fairs, access to a traditional healer and Elder visits, immunization clinics and pop-up clinics to connect families with community supports.

Oxford Kids Childcare Inc. (Surrey)

A commercial facility has been renovated to create 80 new licensed child care spaces, including 48 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten, 16 pre-school spaces and 16 school-age spaces. The facility, which is set to open this fall, will offer a tutoring program on Saturdays and the organization will provide monthly discounts on tuition for children from low-income families.

Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary (Langley)

The Board of Education for School District No. 35 (Langley) will create 99 new licensed child care spaces, including 25 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten, 20 preschool spaces and 54 school-age spaces, that are set to open this fall in the Neighbourhood Learning Centre at Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary school.

Garderie Les Aventuriers at École des Voyageurs (Langley)

The Conseil scolaire francophone (SD 93) is partnering with Fédération des parents francophones de Colombie-Britannique to build a new portable and to renovate both the library and another portable at École des Voyageurs. These updates will create 44 new licensed child care spaces, including 16 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten, four pre-school spaces and 24 school-age spaces. The services will be operated by the fédération on SD 93’s school grounds.

Tiny Tots Willoughby Childcare Society (Langley)

Tiny Tots Willoughby Childcare is renovating a commercial space near Lynn Fripps Elementary school to create 32 new licensed child care spaces, including eight infant and toddler spaces, eight spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten and 16 spaces for children up to the age of 12. The facility, which will have a community garden to harvest vegetables and fruit and programming includes music, martial arts and yoga, is expected to open this summer.
