City of Kamloops Yard Waste Sites All Open as of March 1; Cash No Longer Accepted for Purchasing Compost
Spring is nearly here, and as the snow melts, for many people that means yard cleanup!
The City would like to remind people of the City’s three yard waste drop-off locations and what is accepted.
The Bunker Road and Barnhartvale Landfill Drop-Off-Sites, which are closed for the winter, reopened today.
The Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility remains open year-round; however, new for 2021, the Cinnamon Ridge facility has revised hours. Facility details are listed below:

Barnhartvale Landfill Drop-Off Location

(*This facility was previously open until 7:00 pm.)
Material from the all of the City’s yard waste sites—approximately 11,000 tonnes each year—ends up at the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility, where it is composted for 8–12 months via open-air windrows.
Cinnamon Ridge compost is available for purchase by the public. The fees are $10 per loaded tractor bucket (approximately 500 kg) loaded by the site operator or $2 per small container (garbage can, Rubbermaid container, etc.) loaded by the customer.
What is accepted at yard waste drop-off locations:
• grass clippings
• fallen fruit
• garden waste
• Christmas trees (clean of any wires, tinsel, decorations, or plastic)
• tree prunings up to 24″ diameter
New payment processes for 2021: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in consultation with the City’s yard waste contractor, cash payments for compost purchases (at the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility) will no longer be accepted.
Those looking to purchase compost should be prepared to pay by debit or credit card. This change is being implemented to increase our customers’ personal safety and to allow for more accurate accounting of compost sales.
By composting our yard waste, we can decrease the amount of material that ends up in our landfill and create a nutrient-rich resource that benefits our gardens, lawns, shrubbery, and flower beds. Composting has the added benefits of helping to reduce waste and combat climate change, helping with erosion control and moisture retention, and being an endlessly renewable resource.
Visit Kamloops.ca/YardWaste for a map of the drop-off sites and the location of landfill and recycling depots.
