Kamloops Symphony Kicks Off 3-concert Spring Series With “Sounds in Sand”
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The Kamloops Symphony is excited to announce a Spring Series consisting of three adventurous digital concert experiences: Sounds in Sand (available to view March 13 to April 11), Charlie Parker w/ Strings (April 9 to May 8), and Voilà Viola (April 23 to May 22).
For the first concert in this series, Sounds in Sand, the Kamloops Symphony is adding a visual twist. The orchestra will be joined by Russian sand artists Marina and Eva Sosnina, who will craft elegant real-time artwork in sync with the music in a unique, intercontinental collaboration. This mother-daughter duo will “paint” along to a “modestly modern” arrangement of Mussorgsky’s classic Pictures at an Exhibition for chamber orchestra and create a brand-new work along to Iranian Canadian composer Iman Habibi’s Radiant Light. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is the composer’s best-known work, musically depicting a walk through an art exhibit. Marina and Eva will be re-creating the paintings that inspired the music along with the performance. Starting off the program is Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes for the (at the time) highly unusual instrumentation of string quartet plus piano and clarinet.
As for the other two concerts in the Spring Series: Charlie Parker w/ Strings will see the Kamloops Symphony cross genres to cover the tunes of jazz legend Charlie Parker with one of Canada’s most important jazz empresarios, saxophonist Cory Weeds. Voilà Viola will shine the spotlight on the oft forgotten but thrilling string instrument, the viola, and features soloist Marina Thibeault playing a delightful viola concerto.
Tickets to Sounds in Sand are $15 for an Individual or $25 for a Household Pass. Audience members can also purchase a 3-Pack Mini Subscription to the Spring Series and access Sounds in Sand, Charlie Parker w/ Strings, and Voilà Viola. 3-Packs are $35 for an Individual and $60 for a Household Pass. All tickets can be purchased from Kamloops Live! Box Office at 250-374-5483 or www.kamloopslive.ca.
