Kispiox Bridge now open to vehicles up to 30 tonnes

Kispiox Bridge now open to vehicles up to 30 tonnes

February 19, 2021 at 3:55 pm  BC, News, Politics

Drivers are advised the weight restrictions for the Kispiox Bridge have been raised from eight tonnes to 30 tonnes.

This change will allow some commercial traffic to cross the bridge.

Drivers are reminded to expect intermittent bridge closures and delays of 40 minutes or more while the permanent repairs continue.

During working hours, the bridge is scheduled to be open to single-lane, alternating traffic for 20 minutes at the start of the hour (e.g., 9 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.), followed by a 40-minute closure (e.g., 9:20 a.m. to 10 a.m.). Overnight, the bridge will be open to single-lane, alternating traffic.

There is no detour for vehicles that weigh more than 30 tonnes.

The bridge remains open to pedestrians. People are asked to be cautious when crossing, especially near work crews and equipment.

Ministry engineers and crews are working around the clock to reopen the bridge to all traffic as quickly as possible. The permanent repairs are expected to be completed in late February or early March.

Ministry staff closed the bridge, which is approximately 15 kilometres north of Hazelton, to vehicle traffic following damage from a vehicle incident on Feb. 4. Following essential repairs, the bridge was opened to vehicles under eight tonnes on Feb. 6.

On-site ministry staff have met with the Kispiox Band and are providing frequent updates and assistance.

The ministry is working closely with Emergency Management BC and its partners, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and regional first responders, and are on standby to provide any emergency services that may be needed.

Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits, traffic control devices and flag persons. For the most up-to-date information before travel, check: www.DriveBC.ca
