Columbia Street Paving Starts Next Week
Kamloops, BC – The east end of Columbia Street will soon be getting a facelift, with work starting next week.
Beginning on Monday, September 28, BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. will be repaving Columbia Street from 6th Avenue to the Valleyview Interchange. The work will include new asphalt on travel lanes, replacing utility fixtures, and new pavement markings. Crews will be working from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The work is expected to take about a week.
While traffic flow will be accommodated with single-lane alternating movements, motorists are encouraged to use another route. Transit Route No. 16 will receive priority access through the construction zone, but users should expect delays and check the NextRide app for up-to-date information. Transit Route No. 6 will have a temporary detour—check BCTransit.com for details.
Driveway and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the construction zone, but parking will not be permitted on Columbia Street for the duration of the project. Residents are encouraged to park on their own property off of the lane or on nearby avenues.
“This section of arterial road has some of the most deteriorated asphalt in the city,” commented Glen Farrow, the City’s Streets and Environmental Services Manager. “We have a window of opportunity to improve the travel lanes on this busy section of road. We’ve taken advantage of the Pro-D day on Monday, so we’re hoping that there will be significantly less traffic on the road while we mill the asphalt. Additionally, it will be nice going into the winter without having to regularly fill potholes through this usually constricted section of roadway.”
More information on the project is available at Kamloops.ca/CapitalProjects.
