2020 Property Tax Notice and Home Owner Grant Final Reminder
Kamloops, BC – The second extended penalty date for 2020 property taxes is drawing near. Residential property owners are encouraged to pay on or before September 30, 2020, to avoid an additional 5% penalty, which will be applied to their account on October 1, 2020. Residents are also encouraged to claim their Home Owner Grants (HOGs) as any outstanding tax amount relating to HOGs will be penalized 10% on October 1.
In addition, September 30, 2020, is the deadline for commercial property taxes (Classes 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8), with a 10% late penalty applied on October 1, 2020 on any outstanding amounts.
In a typical year, property taxes are due on July 2, and a 10% late penalty is applied on July 3. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Council approved extending the property tax penalty dates and splitting the 10% residential penalty between two dates—one in July and one in October.
“The economic slowdown caused by the pandemic has had financial implications for many people in our community. To all of those who have already paid their property taxes, know that your contribution is supporting essential services throughout Kamloops and is much appreciated,” said Cara Dawson, the City’s Revenue and Taxation Manager.
A comprehensive list of payment options is outlined on the reverse of the property tax notice and can also be found online at Kamloops.ca/PropertyTax. Alternatively, property owners can connect with City staff by calling 250-828-3437 or emailing revenue@kamloops.ca. HOGs can be claimed online at Kamloops.ca/eHOG.
The City continues to asks residents who are paying in person to be patient while staff adhere to social distancing restrictions and sanitization protocols. City Hall (7 Victoria Street West) is open to the public for in‑person payment. City Hall is now operating on winter hours, 8:30 am–4:30 pm.
Drop boxes are also available at City Hall (24 hours) and the North Shore Community Policing Office, which is located at 915 7th Street (8:30 am–4:30 pm), where residents can deposit their property tax payment and HOG application form.
