Premier’s statement marking Labour Day
Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement to recognize Labour Day:
“The history of Labour Day in Canada is rooted in protest, from a time when fighting for basic rights on the job was illegal in this country.
“We’ve come a long way from those roots over a century ago, but the spirit of the Labour Day movement is still as important today: to protect and champion the rights of workers.
“This year, Labour Day is different from any other in our province’s history. The pandemic continues to challenge us, but it has also taught us valuable lessons – like how much we depend on the workers of this province every day.
“From grocery-store employees and health-care professionals, to transit workers and educators who are about to head back to the classroom: you are improving the lives of British Columbians every day. Our government will continue to stand up for your health, equality and security, especially during the pandemic.
“We are following through on our promise to raise the minimum wage and make changes to the Workers Compensation Act to better support injured workers. We’ve taken the lead on establishing a national paid sick leave program so workers can stay home if they’re sick. And as we restart our economy, we need to make sure it works for everyone – not just the people at the top.
“To all those who continue to work during this crisis: thank you and happy Labour Day!”
