International Literacy Day Tuesday, Sept. 8; fostering early readers – TRU Newsroom
Tuesday, Sept. 8, is International Literacy Day. The United Nations has set this year’s theme as literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, particularly looking at the role of educators and changing pedagogies.
Dr. Gloria Ramirez, a TRU associate professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, is an expert in children’s biliteracy and bilingual development. She is available to discuss the science of reading and how important it is to use research informed best practices. She can also talk about the importance of reading extensively, including for pleasure, and how parents and caregivers can support the development of this habit. Finally, she can speak to the importance of laying a strong foundation for literacy in the early years through strong oral language skills and effective instruction and the long-term consequences of weak reading skills.
