COVID-19: Donation Empowers Kamloops to do More for Vulnerable Populations

September 1, 2020 at 10:07 am  Kamloops, Municipal, News

Kamloops, BC – Vulnerable populations have been struggling with the impacts of COVID-19 since the very beginning of this pandemic, and the City of Kamloops is pleased to detail how the donation it received from the CMA Foundation (CMAF), in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), will enable our community to better protect and assist those who need it the most.

“I want to thank the CMAF for this donation and the FCM for their support in facilitating this critical initiative,” said Ty Helgason, the City’s Acting Social and Community Development Supervisor. The COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations will help our city, and cities all over Canada, to urgently help the most vulnerable by supporting local and community-level action.”

As front-line governments, municipalities see first-hand how vulnerable populations have been hit hardest by this pandemic. Local governments have been on the front lines since the beginning of the pandemic and are ideally placed to effectively direct funds to deliver results. These funds will support the meal program for the temporary overflow shelter on Royal Avenue and additional overnight staff for youth in supportive housing to ensure they have the support they need to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic safely.

“To receive this kind of direct funding from an organization like the CMAF is not only a testament to the great work Kamloops and other communities across Canada have been doing since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is also a welcome breath of fresh air. Municipalities have been working hard to keep Canadians safe during these trying times, and this funding will allow us to continue to provide vital services to our residents.”
