City of Kamloops Adopts Electric Vehicle and Electric Bike Strategy
Council authorized the adoption of the Electric Vehicle (EV) and Electric Bike (E-Bike) Strategy on August 25, 2020 with the understanding that only action items with no costs attached will move forward in 2021. Other actions identified within the strategy will be revisited as funding becomes available.
The EV and E‑Bike Strategy will guide how the City supports the transition to electric transportation in Kamloops. The strategy was developed between December 2019 and May 2020 by conducting background research, reviewing best practices, and engaging residents and stakeholders.
Engagement activities revealed public support for actions that prepare the community for the transition to electric transportation, including expanding EV charging access at home, in the workplace, and in public spaces and accelerating the build-out of cycling infrastructure.
“As more residents and organizations make the shift to low-carbon and active transportation, our community greenhouse gas emissions will decrease,” said Glen Cheetham, the City’s Sustainability Services Supervisor. “Taking action to reduce transportation emissions is a key priority as they represent 66% of our community’s total emissions.”
EVs and E-bikes are zero-emission vehicles, have low operating costs, and are expected to play an important role in contributing to a healthier, cleaner, low-carbon future.
