Amended Transit Future Action Plan Finalized and Available Online

Amended Transit Future Action Plan Finalized and Available Online

August 19, 2020 at 3:20 pm  Kamloops, Municipal, News

The Transit Future Action Plan (TFAP), which was adopted by Council on July 14, 2020, has been finalized and posted online.

At the July 14 Council meeting, Council authorized the adoption of the plan with direction to amend the proposed reintroduction of Route 8 Battle. The amendments are now complete, and the finalized document is available on Kamloops.ca/TransportationPlanning.

The TFAP is the result of a comprehensive and collaborative process that included City staff, BC Transit, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, and transit stakeholders.

The plan’s development included multiple forms of public engagement, analyzing existing transit use, and feedback from stakeholder groups and was also informed by the City’s Official Community Plan (KAMPLAN) and the Transportation Master Plan

The TFAP’s overall focus is on the expansion of the Kamloops transit system. It is an update of the 2012 Transit Future Plan (TFP), which successfully guided transit improvements that have resulted in an over 15% increase in ridership—ridership recently exceeded four million annual rides. The TFAP will help to establish direction and clarity regarding transit system priorities in Kamloops for the next five years and beyond.

“The TFAP identifies service and infrastructure priorities, proposes transit routes that optimize connectivity between neighbourhoods, and will help the City achieve the Transportation Master Plan’s goal of 8 million annual transit rides by the year 2039,” said Deven Matkowski, the City’s Engineering Manager, who presented the final TFAP to Council at the July 14 meeting.

Infrastructure priorities include new transit exchanges or upgrades to existing exchanges and improvements to customer amenities at transit stops.

Notably, the timing of this plan to build on and continue transit system growth has come during the global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, transit ridership has decreased significantly across the province.

As BC Transit and the City move into their recovery phases for COVID-19, it is recognized that timelines and priorities established through the plan’s development may need to be re-evaluated as the system transitions through the recovery phases and ridership demand returns.
