City of Kamloops Slowly Reopening Civic Facilities

Kamloops, BC – As BC enters Phase 2 of the BC Restart Plan, the City of Kamloops is committed to gradually reopening City facilities. The first phase of this reopening will start on June 1, 2020, as follows:

  • Development and Engineering Services (105 Seymour Street) and Kamloops Fire Rescue Station No. 1 (1205 Summit Drive) will be open to the public starting June 1, 2020 by appointment only.

  • The Civic Operations Centre (955 Concordia Way) and the Bylaw Services Centre (1303 Mission Flats Road) will be open to the public starting June 1, 2020.

  • City Hall (7 Victoria Street West) will be open to the public starting June 8, 2020. The first two hours of every day (8:00–10:00 am) will be reserved for seniors or people with underlying health issues that make them more vulnerable or high risk.

These facilities will be open for regular summer hours (8:00 am–4:00 pm). Residents are reminded to NOT enter any City facility if they are unwell. Anyone displaying obvious signs of flu-like symptoms may be asked to leave.

May 22, 2020 Video Update—Mayor Ken Christian talks about the City of Kamloops’ commitment to gradually re-opening City facilities as BC enters Phase 2 of the BC Restart Plan.

Similar to what has become familiar in retail stores, residents can expect to see physical distancing barriers and signage and increased cleaning practices between customers. Residents should expect longer wait times and limited service levels due to ongoing reduced staffing levels and increased cleaning and disinfecting. We encourage all residents to seek alternative methods to connect with City staff, such as online or by phone.

“Many City services can be paid for through our website,” said Mayor Ken Christian. “With property taxes coming up, we encourage everyone to look for alternatives to paying in person. Taxes can be paid through your bank, by mail, or online/telephone banking. Visiting City Hall should be your last resort.”

Planning is underway to reopen other City facilities as well, including recreation facilities. The Province has tasked the BC Recreation and Parks Association with developing a coordinated, province-wide approach to reactivating recreation programs and services and reopening recreation facilities. This direction will inform the plan for how and when the City recreation facilities reopen.

“We are being methodical in how and when we welcome residents and staff back so that everyone feels confident that we are doing everything we can to keep them safe when they enter a City building,” said Mayor Christian. “We look forward to seeing staff and residents back in our facilities and continuing to serve the public in the safest way possible.”
