Dramatic decline in North American bird populations – TRU Newsroom

September 20, 2019 at 11:38 am  Education, Kamloops, News

Dr. Matthew Reudink can talk about recent news reports (articles have appeared in Time and Science magazines) regarding the dramatic decline in North American bird populations.

One of his main areas of research is population declines and long-term trends in migratory birds, as well as movement patterns and the effects of urbanization on bird populations. Dr. Reudink also looks at behavioural ecology, evolution and ornithology, with a particular emphasis on the year-round ecology of migratory birds and the evolution of ornamental traits.

He earned his B.Sc. from Willamette University, M.Sc. from Villanova University, and Ph.D. from Queen’s University, during which time he conducted a pre-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution, followed by a post-doc at Trent University and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. He began teaching at Thompson Rivers University in 2010 and became an associate professor in 2015. He was treasurer for the Society of Canadian Ornithologists until 2017, and is a member of the Council for the Association of Field Ornithologists, an elected member of the American Ornithological Society and an associate editor for Behaviour. In 2018, he was an Erskine Fellow (visiting professor) at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ.
