Hazelton opens heart to its community

The Upper Skeena Recreation Centre is now open, complete with a new professional-sized indoor ice rink with heated seating for 500 spectators, plus a multi-purpose gym, fitness centre and meeting and social areas, including kitchen space.

The new recreation centre, also known as the Heart of the Hazeltons, will serve as the region’s centre for sport and cultural activities. The 5,500 square-metre facility will have programs and services for all ages and abilities to support the educational, health and social needs of the surrounding communities.

The $20.1-million project was made possible through government and First Nations investments and donations by local businesses, philanthropic agencies and individual donors.

The Province of B.C. invested $4.5 million, including $500,000 through the BC Rural Dividend program.

Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure —

“Investing in local infrastructure such as the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre gives people better access to the services they need and helps to build thriving communities. I applaud everyone involved for all the hard work that has brought the Heart of the Hazeltons to life.”

Doug Donaldson, MLA for Stikine —

“More than four decades ago, the Ken Trombley Memorial Arena was made possible through an amazing display of volunteer spirit and common purpose. Today, the same volunteer spirit and common purpose gives us the Heart of the Hazeltons — a great example of northern co-operation and collaboration.”

Phil Germuth, chair, Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine —

“As board chair, and speaking on behalf of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, I am so proud of this accomplishment. It will be great to see the community use and enjoy this facility, which offers so much in terms of recreational, wellness and social opportunities. I admire the vision and collaboration that has taken place over a number of years to bring us to today’s celebration.”

Diane McRae, executive director, Gitksan Government Commission —

“We are very proud to have participated in this hugely collaborative project as a member of the Owner’s Partnership Committee since 2013. This being our first recreation centre, its completion will benefit the health and well-being of our people for many, many years to come and we thank all our partners for helping the Upper Skeena Region realize the dream.”

Peter Newbery, chair, Heart of the Hazeltons Fundraising Campaign —

“We are deeply grateful to the donors and supporters who have seen and responded to the needs and challenges in our community. Staying true to our vision, the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre will provide healthy activity, education, career and economic opportunities, and has the potential to be transformative for the people in our region.”
