Premier’s statement on Vancouver Pride

Premier’s statement on Vancouver Pride

August 4, 2019 at 10:53 am  BC, News, Politics

Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement to mark Vancouver Pride:

“Today, over 650,000 people will march on the streets of Vancouver in celebration and support of the strength, resilience and activism of the LGBTQ2S+ community. We march to show that love is love, and we march so everyone can feel safe and free to express themselves, no matter what their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

“Pride is a celebration born of protest. This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village in New York City, which are seen as the beginning of the pride movement. LGBTQ2S+ people said, ‘no more’ to unjust harassment and discrimination. Thanks to these protestors and their legacy, Pride is now celebrated in many countries.

“LGBTQ2S+ people have fought hard for the basic human rights and freedoms that so many take for granted. The right to equal marriage, access to adoption and legal protections, and the protection of gender expression and gender identity.

“As we celebrate the progress LGBTQ2S+ people have achieved, we recognize the discrimination people face every day here in B.C. and around the globe, simply because of who they are or who they love.

“To defend, protect and promote human rights for every person in British Columbia, our government established B.C.’s first independent human rights commissioner. It is every person’s right to live without oppression, violence, fear or stigma.

“Together, we can make B.C. a stronger, more inclusive province where everyone is free to be who they are and love who they love.

“To everyone taking part in today’s parade and celebrations, Happy Pride!”
