Backgrounders

  • Early work began on Feb. 19, 2019, to prepare for temporary detours for the numbers 14, 16, and 17 trolley bus routes. These changes will keep Broadway safe for workers and the public, while keeping buses, people and traffic moving during construction of the Broadway subway project.
  • The project is a 5.7-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus.
  • Stations will be located on Broadway within one block of Main, Cambie, Oak, Granville and Arbutus streets, and near Great Northern Way.
  • Construction is scheduled to start in 2020 with the line going into service in 2025.
  • Once opened, the commute from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Station will take about 11 minutes, saving the average transit commuter almost 30 minutes a day and relieving congestion along Broadway.
  • The project will be delivered under the Province’s Community Benefits Agreement, encouraging local participation and providing jobs, training, apprenticeships and opportunities for Indigenous peoples, women and youth.
  • The budget is $2.83 billion, funded and delivered by the Province of B.C., with contributions from the Government of Canada and the City of Vancouver.
  • The Broadway subway project is a key part of the rapid transit program in Metro Vancouver’s Mayors’ Council 10-Year Vision. The vision is funded by the governments of B.C. and Canada, TransLink and local municipalities.
