World Oceans Day: June 8

June 1, 2019 at 11:18 pm  Education, Kamloops, News

Dr. Louis A. Gosselin is an ecologist who can speak to the effects of climate change on our oceans and the impacts of microplastics on marine life. With World Ocean Day quickly approaching people around the world are joining together to raise awareness of critical issues surrounding our ocean’s health and the decline in biodiversity.

Dr. Gosselin teaches and oversees undergraduate and graduate marine research, including projects examining the effects of microplastics on marine animals, how the warming of our oceans is contributing to a decline in animal health, and how the abundance of marine animal populations is dependent on survival through the vulnerable juvenile period.

Background

Dr. Gosselin has been a professor of Biological Sciences at TRU since 1997. His research focus is the ecology of early juvenile marine invertebrates: their life history, mortality factors, adaptations and behaviour. He also studies the ecology of small animals inhabiting saline ponds (alkaline ponds) of the BC interior.
He teaches courses at TRU in: Evolution of Animal Body Plans, Introduction to Ecology, Field Methods in Marine Ecology, Honours seminars, and a graduate course in Environmental Science. He has also been carrying out research at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Center on Vancouver Island since 1989.
